Indigofera Tinctoria is a three-movement project containing the pieces, “Indigo,” “Fera,” and “Tinctoria.” Indigo is a slow and relaxed jazzy piece for piano and flute. While the piano plays lush, colorful chords, the flute couples with this with a sweet smooth melody. Fera is a wild and sporadic piece for flute and clarinet. Fera pulls harmonic ideas from Indigo and breaks them up into dissonant, arhythmic motifs. Tinctoria is an upbeat jazz piece for piano and clarinet. The sharp sassiness of the clarinet glides on top of the piano’s jazz chords and really makes you move! (Second Place MTNA Composition Competition 2015)
Variations on "Littleroot Town"
“Variations on Littleroot Town” is a piece inspired by the 8-bit theme from the Pokemon video game series. As the piece progresses, the variations move from simple to complex. Variation One is an innocent, shimmering variation on the original theme and includes piano, cello, and bass. The piano plays the single-line melody throughout this variation and is accompanied by the cello counterpart and a moving bassline. Variation Two is an ominous variation on the theme. The cello plays a minor rendition of the theme, while the piano provides a thick harmonic texture. Variation Three is an exuberant, jazzy take on the original theme. This duet between piano and xylophone uses the two voices to simulate a conversation. Variation Four contains offbeat, sporadic performances from all four instruments, creating a sly feeling. Variation Five is the grand finale. This variation brings all four instruments together to provide a stunning finish. (Second Place MTNA Composition Competition 2014)
When I started learning how to compose music (2013), I was also doing a lot of filming and video editing. Thus, at the suggestion of my music composition teacher, one of my first ventures into music composition was to create an original score to accompany the wonderful short film created by Rodrigo Blaas.
