NARRATIVE
I started playing piano at age six and it remains my favorite instrument. Around the age of 13, I decided to try a new instrument and chose the cello. I played cello for a year, but ultimately went back to piano. I missed the rich harmonies that piano offered.
As much as I enjoy playing piano, my interest has never been to become a piano virtuoso. Mostly I enjoy creating interesting and beautiful sounds on the piano and understanding why the sound is interesting and beautiful. I enjoy the theory behind music as much as I enjoy playing it. My interest in music theory ultimately led me to music composition.
I’ve been composing music for 4 years and it continues to be something I really enjoy. Most of my compositions are jazz or classical pieces, but I’ve also scored music for short films and video games. Two of my original compositions won second place at the state level and were selected for live performances at the awards ceremony. I study composition with Julie Harris and was selected to attend a 3-week music composition intensive at UNC School of the Arts in 2015. Links to a sample of my original scores can be found in the “Original Music” section.
My interest in music production and engineering began about the same time I began to study more traditional music composition. I bought a microphone and an audio interface, taught myself how to use various DAWs, and started recording and mixing for my amateur musician friends. I found that I couldn’t get enough. I studied synthesizers and how to program them, and I studied the elements that make up a good song. As I’ve continued to build my knowledge of recorded music, the tracks to come out of my studio have since been seen in a more serious light, which has resulted in a steady flow of local musicians. In the past year alone, I have engineered over 30 songs. Links to a sample of songs I’ve recorded and engineered can be found in the “Mixed/Mastered” section.
